The team was formed in 1972, as Blacon High School Handbell Ringers, to raise money for local charities. When the Team Director, Derek Jackson, retired from teaching in 1993 the group was renamed Blacon Handbell Ringers - although the ringers were still recruited from pupils at the school and practices were held in the school. After ringing around the Chester area for several years the team became affiliated to the Handbell Ringers of Great Britain -this is a national organisation representing over 1200 teams. Blacon Handbell Ringers have rung in all but one of the national and regional rallies since they became members of HRGB and in the annual National Rally Concert on six occasions.
The various teams have made many radio broadcast both on local and national radio. Television appearances include Saturday Superstore, This Morning and, in April 1998, a guest appearance on Blue Peter to celebrate the team's Silver Jubilee Year. The team has twice rung for HRH Prince Charles and in 1993 rang for Her Majesty the Queen, when she came to Chester.
In 1982 the first overseas tour took place - this was a visit to Dun Laoghaire in Northern Ireland. This was the first of many concert tours, which have included Cyprus,Europe and the United States of America. The last American visit was USA '99 and this year the team spent two weeks in France and Germany. Blacon Handbell Ringers spend a great deal of time ringing for local groups and organisations and more information about their local activities can be found by clicking on the link below.
